Have you met or are you in contact with relatives in Hungary? What was it like to make  that connection or what is it like to have that connection?

Not that I know of. I visited my grandmother’s village of Ináncs. The priest had checked with his parishoners to see if anyone knew of any family. However, on my recent trip to Hungary, I had a different experience. The waiter at the restaurant asked me about Hungarian roots, and it turns out he is from my grandfather’s village , Szabolcsveresmart and his wife is a Vasas. Small world. So I may have to do some research in that area to see if there are any extended family. I never expected to persue this – but now it looks like I will have to!

I still have a cousin that lives in Budapest. I am connected with my mom’s city of Debrecen and my dad’s of Koromla. They are all great cities because of their vast history.

My grandmother was born in Rimavská Sobota, Tamasfalva in 1902. I found out I still have relatives living there and I will be visiting them in 2026.

My dad immigrated to the US in 1923. He was 12 and kept in touch with his family in Sarud until he passed in 1980. My mom and I continued to correspond with them for another 10 years but then lost track of them for the next 18 years. In 2008 my husband and I traveled to Hungary and decided to take a bus trip to my dad’s village of Sarud, Heves. We had the address of relatives and we were able to meet them inperson! Our whole family traveled back again in 2017 and met more relatives. We continue to keep in touch with them.

I had no idea we had relatives in Hungary until someone contacted us from Hungary in 2011 and asked if we were the family they were looking for. It was amazing to meet them in 2012. And we have kept in contact with them ever since. It was amazing to meet the first cousins of my grandmother that she had never met face-to-face but wrote letters to.
