My name is Péter Szaffkó, current Director of Debrecen Summer School, and will speak about this prestigious institution established in 1927 during the Expo. Since we are approaching our 100th anniversary, we are very much interested in the memories and experiences of those who have visited our school any time in the past.

It is so good to hear from you. We are certainly interested in any memorabilia connected to Debrecen Summer School. We are trying to collect a lot of memories and photos, perhaps interviews for the anniversary so everything and anything is warmly welcome!

Actually now that I think of it 1995 was not my last class, I returned with my husband for a class in 1998.

Hi Peter,
I’m proud to be a graduate of the Debrecen Summer School which I attended regularly in the early 1990’s when I was preparing to apply for the PhD program at ELTE. I wasn’t there as often as Monika Scheda my friend since we were in the superintensive class winter of 1991( I think!) Edit Hoffman is in my mind still the greatest language teacher I have ever encountered – but there were many other wonderful instructors as well. I think my last class was the Winter Course in 1995 – the Pálinkás Jó Reggelt group. ( Somewhat notorious for our sense of humor) Debrecen prepared me well for my time studying at ELTE and was also a wonderful cultural experience. I have very fond memories of my time with you and highly endorse the program.

I was there for a month in 2016 and I really enjoyed it. It was intense — Hungarian 5 days a week for about 6 hours a day for one month was a lot. And I lived with my relative so I didn’t stay on campus but I know there is some great programming on the off time!

Szia Péter! I attended your summer school for a week last year as part of my preparation for my citizenship interview. I had a private class with Kata and we worked through the majority of the B1-level textbook together. For me, the experience was invaluable! Before that, I was taking group courses online and was still struggling with shyness, fear of speaking, and fear of making mistakes. But I felt that being forced to speak, read, and participate for 30 hours in 5 days got me “over the hump” with my nervousness and was a huge boost to my self-confidence. A few months later, I passed my citizenship interview, then I took my oath and became a citizen in June! I had a terrific experience in Debrecen Summer School and would definitely recommend it to anyone serious about learning the language.
