This is the best place to connect with Joyce about her presentation.

Excellent presentation, Joyce! I have one passed down to me from my Hungarian great grandparents. It is 26″ x 34″ and depicts a man and woman in traditional dress in a rural scene with a village in the background. The wording says: Beautiful you are, beautiful you are Hungary. More beautiful than the whole wide world”. My great grandmother came to the US in 1905, visited Hungary in 1938, and lived until 1972 so I can’t even guess when she got it or if she embroidered it herself.

Absolutely amazing! I did know that these existed. There were no such things in my grandparents apartment in CT.

Thank you, Joyce for an informative talk. I am interested in folk art, but never heard about wall cloths. Now, I am more knowledgeable. Enjoyed your great images embedded in presentation of Hungarian exhibits showcasing this art form. Linda

I started a small collection after finding 2 redwork ones at and estate sale in the 1980’s I have them framed. I have since acquired more. The sayings are interesting to be sure. My favorite one I have on display. It is a printed one much newer. It is of a little girl with her kutya over an old stove. In English – the saying is Cooking and Baking are easy as long as you have lots of money. I bought it as a reminder of me in my grandma’s kitchen, baking with her.

I also saw a large collection at the Paloc Museum on a trip.

Joyce, I really enjoyed your presentation. I’m impressed with your love of the artform and that you’ve been collecting falvedo”k since the 1980s! The simple hand-embroidery could easily be overlooked as genuine folkart. I was able to read all the inscriptions — very interesting!
