Great presentation Liz. I thoroughly enjoyed looking at all of your memorabilia. You’ve inspired me to go through and look for things. I still have to locate my great aunt’s, sister to my grandmother, son who had I believe three children and I know my mother met them when she went back to Hungary in 1974, I think and I need to locate them! Thanks!

          Liz,
Thank you for sharing your family history. You are lucky to have so many photos! All I have is an old letter, some mail receipts and a photo or two of my great grandfather and my Dad in Connecticut in the late 40s. But, I followed advice from genealogists to ask Aunts, cousins, etc to see if they had anything. I didn’t expect they did, but I asked anyway. It turned out that when my great grandmother died in 1970, my cousin helped her Dad empty out their house. She had a box that contained their passports, Declaration of Intention paperwork, the blueprints for their house, travel paperwork for their trip back to Hungary in 1938, letters and more. Luckily I photocopied everything in 2001 before I sent the box back to my cousin because now she isn’t able to find the originals!

It is amazing when you look at what has been put away .. to see what information you have. I have my grandma’s prayer book from Hungary as well as the funeral cards from family that were kept. My mother saved the early birthday cards, and notes that she wrote when I was little. One of the little notes was written phonetically in English (misspelled ) but it is in her handwriting. Photos, that I have collected over the years( I had negatives made and then photos) If I hadn’t done this in the 1970’s -80’s – I wouldn’t have the copies. The originals have long disappeared. I have some letters and stories from my mother’s first cousin. He wrote poems, stories of the Altoona area along with his letters. My mother had tried to get her brother’s military records and was told they burned in 1973 St Louis fire (US Army) She wrote to Senator Bob Dole asking for his help. I have both a copy of her letter as well as his signed response. I didn’t think I had much.. but after writing this, enough for a start to write
