This made me miss the Bethlen Ligonier picnic. My brother was facinated with the cimbalom and had gone to speak with the musician on break. The songs bring up pleasant memories of listening as well as watching the dancers

It is amazing when you look at what has been put away .. to see what information you have. I have my grandma’s prayer book from Hungary as well as the funeral cards from family that were kept. My mother saved the early birthday cards, and notes that she wrote when I was little. One of the little notes was written phonetically in English (misspelled ) but it is in her handwriting. Photos, that I have collected over the years( I had negatives made and then photos) If I hadn’t done this in the 1970’s -80’s – I wouldn’t have the copies. The originals have long disappeared. I have some letters and stories from my mother’s first cousin. He wrote poems, stories of the Altoona area along with his letters. My mother had tried to get her brother’s military records and was told they burned in 1973 St Louis fire (US Army) She wrote to Senator Bob Dole asking for his help. I have both a copy of her letter as well as his signed response. I didn’t think I had much.. but after writing this, enough for a start to write

Nice to have a fresh look at making the pattern for the egg. I took the class and my pattern was a little shaky, It was easier to see using the Sharpie to see the pattern

Very interesting. I never knew there were so many varieties. Good to know about buying it from the farmer rather than a supermarket. Nothing like garlic to add great flavor to food

I was so young when my grandmother passed. I found correspondence that my aunt and my grandmother had – all in Hungarian. I wished I had asked either one about Hungarian connections. Also the letters, may have held some information. But it wasn’t meant to be

It was interesting to find out that Unitarianism started in Hungary and the history of the religion. I did not know that it existed in Hungary. I only knew of Catholic, Calvinist/Reform and Jewish Synagogues In the US it seems it is a compromise religion for people of mixed faiths. So I did learn some new things

I was able to have already tried a number of these dishes on the tours with Liz and Andrea. The gulyas was a go to meal when my cousin and I were on our own. I had the rooster parts stew . We had wild boar stew on one tour at a vineyard. Hungarians seem to take what they have and cook spicing it up with paprika. Thanks for the presentation .

I started a small collection after finding 2 redwork ones at and estate sale in the 1980’s I have them framed. I have since acquired more. The sayings are interesting to be sure. My favorite one I have on display. It is a printed one much newer. It is of a little girl with her kutya over an old stove. In English – the saying is Cooking and Baking are easy as long as you have lots of money. I bought it as a reminder of me in my grandma’s kitchen, baking with her.

I also saw a large collection at the Paloc Museum on a trip.

I remember my grandmother mainly baking pastries, Dios Beigli, Turos pastry, and home made noodles. My Aunt Helen, taught me Uborka Salata. Which is one of my favorites. My mother made great Stuffed Peppers. My Aunt also did the Haluski. All memorable.

Not that I know of. I visited my grandmother’s village of Ináncs. The priest had checked with his parishoners to see if anyone knew of any family. However, on my recent trip to Hungary, I had a different experience. The waiter at the restaurant asked me about Hungarian roots, and it turns out he is from my grandfather’s village , Szabolcsveresmart and his wife is a Vasas. Small world. So I may have to do some research in that area to see if there are any extended family. I never expected to persue this – but now it looks like I will have to!

Thank you for your presentation. It is a great offer for people wanting to learn in Hungary. If I were younger…. it might have been something to persue.

I am looking forward to your class. I have done quilting, using fabrics from my relatives- called a Charm Quilt. I have done several of these in the past for relative’s weddings. My Aunt gave me her fabric and a yard of fabric from my grandmother , which was included on each one. I have collected lace, buttons, fabrics, and handkerchiefs from family. I have some Matyo and Kalocsa embroidered pieces, rescued from Estate sales. I look forward to creating something interesting with them in the future. Thank you for your ideas.
