Great presentation Liz. I thoroughly enjoyed looking at all of your memorabilia. You’ve inspired me to go through and look for things. I still have to locate my great aunt’s, sister to my grandmother, son who had I believe three children and I know my mother met them when she went back to Hungary in 1974, I think and I need to locate them! Thanks!
I see some have written that they grew up in Los Angeles in a Hungarian community. I was born in Los Angeles – downtown at The Hospital of the Good Samaritan. My parents and I lived in LA for a few years until we moved the Valley in San Fernando. We did end up in Burbank and I remember my mother would speak in Hungarian to the butcher at the meat market there, and there was a restaurant called Little Vienna in North Hollywood area and we would go and my grandpa would cry when the violinist came to play. He missed the Old Country as did my grandmother.
So good to reminisce!August 29, 2025 at 6:11 pm in reply to: Historical Literacy: It’s importance in understanding and valuing our Hungarian heritage #3699Katalin! This was so wonderful and informative. I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation. You are one who has made a difference in Hungarian culture by doing something about it!
My grandmother was born in 1904 in Hungary, and she used to tell me when I was a little girl, “I was born in two places”, as her birthplace eventually became Slovakia – it was Czechoslovakia when she was still alive as she passed away in 1973. This Expo has given me so much insight where I thought I would never have any in what my grandparents went through individually and together before they left in the mid-1920s to Canada.
Thank you! I feel as though I am in school all this week, but the difference is I LOVE everything I am learning!

I did not realize that I have wall cloths from my grandmother and grandfather in my possession. I have one that depicts a husband coming home with a bouquet of flowers to his wife. I had a friend who was from Hungary that told me that it was the custom that on payday, the husband buy flowers for his wife!
Well down Joyce! I enjoyed it immensely!

MariannaAugust 27, 2025 at 11:14 am in reply to: The Most Rewarding Way to Get Hungarian Citizenship: Simplified Naturalization with Renata Forgacs #3394Hello Renata!
Wonderful presentation and so informative! I wanted to ask how someone who emigrated from Hungary, which my maternal grandfather, grandmother, and uncle did, would break their Hungarian citizenship? I have yet to find actual birth certificates in Hungary for them; however, I have found records of birth in registries. I am also lucky enough to have possession of my grandfather’s passport from when he emigrated in the 1920’s. I would be interested to find out as I would now what path to follow to obtain my own Hungarian citizenship! I do not speak Hungarian.
Thank you and definitely worth watching your presentation. Very well done and clear and imformative!
