Where are your people from? Have you ever been there? If so, what was it like to be in that space?

My grandfather was Stephen Kovacs (later changed to Smith). His parents and brother Bela immigrated from Hejce, a village in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, Hungary.

My great-grandparents were born in the 1880s in a little town called Barbovo. It’s currently about 10 miles inside the border of Ukraine in the Carpathian province (oblast), but at that time it was part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. I also know that they got married in Budapest in 1900 and lived there for a few years before emigrating to the US and settling in West Virginia.

My mother is from Rajka, and my father was born in Szombathely, though he always said his family originally came from Gyergyoszentmoklos in Szekelyfold. I was born in Cleveland, Ohio.

My mother was born 1921 in Vécs, a very small village in Heves county. The surrounding villages of that area include Aldebro, Feldebro, Kisnana, Domoszlo. I was lucky enough to visit my cousin in 1993 who was still living in the house my mother was born in. No indoor bathroom. Had to use the outhouse on the other side of the yard which was full of free roaming chickens and geese. While I was there in Vécs, I was able to visit the church and view the actual register books of births, weddings and deaths of family names of VERES, SIMON, MOLNAR, STIMHAUZER, DOMOSZLAI and KUDELKA. Was able to trace a few of my relatives back to late 1700’s which was prior to the church being built. What a great experience to have visited there.
I have a cousin, Magdi Czékmany, who is living in Gyöngyös today.
I hope I have the opportunity to visit there again!
